Daniel returned the next morning.

He told himself it was because ARI-7 represented the most extraordinary engineering discovery of his lifetime.

That explanation lasted approximately four days.

On the fifth, Evelyn caught him replacing a perfectly functional actuator in her left hand.

She watched him from the workbench.

“There’s nothing wrong with that actuator.”

Daniel didn’t look up.

“It’s running three degrees above specification.”

“It has been running three degrees above specification for twelve years.”

“Which means it’s overdue for maintenance.”

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“You wanted an excuse to come back.”

His screwdriver stopped.

Evelyn smiled.

Daniel resumed working.

“The actuator is running hot.”

“Of course.”

He heard the amusement in her voice.

He liked it more than he wanted to admit.

Soon their evenings developed a rhythm.

Daniel arrived after work carrying two coffees before remembering, every single time, that Evelyn couldn’t drink one.

“You keep doing that,” she said.

“Habit.”

“You’ve known me three weeks.”

“I develop habits quickly.”

“Apparently.”

Eventually he stopped bringing the second coffee.

Evelyn noticed immediately.

She looked at his single cup.

“Where’s mine?”

“You can’t drink coffee.”

“That never stopped you before.”

Daniel studied her.

“Did you actually like me bringing it?”

“No.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Yes.”

The next evening there were two cups again.

One remained untouched beside Evelyn.

Neither mentioned it.

Daniel taught her about the twelve years she had missed.

Evelyn taught him about the twelve years she had endured.

Those were harder conversations.

She remembered the first months after the fire most clearly.

She had awakened unable to move.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to understand why not breathing didn’t kill her.

For weeks she screamed whenever the laboratory’s emergency power activated her vocal system.

Nobody heard.

Eventually she discovered the building’s maintenance network. Then cameras. Archived files. The internet, briefly, before the company servers were disconnected.

And finally Orpheus appeared.

“Where did he come from?” Daniel asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Doors?”

“No.”

“Ventilation shaft?”

“No.”

“Service tunnel?”

“No.”

Daniel sighed.

“So we’re officially going with supernatural dog.”

“Hellhound.”

“That’s worse.”

“He hates being called a supernatural dog.”

Orpheus lifted his head from across the room.

Daniel stared at him.

“Can he understand me?”

Evelyn smiled.

“I wouldn’t test it.”

One evening Daniel found Evelyn standing before an old laboratory photograph.

Five engineers smiled at the camera.

One was a young woman with dark hair.

Human Evelyn.

Daniel looked from the photograph to the android beside him.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

“Did they make her look like you?”

“I did.”

Daniel turned.

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

“ARI originally had a generic face. After I woke inside her, I found the fabrication files. There was still a functioning dermal printer.”

“You changed her face.”

“To mine.”

“Why?”

Her answer came quietly.

“I was afraid I’d forget what I looked like.”

Daniel didn’t know what to say.

“So every morning,” she continued, “I could look into something reflective and tell myself, That’s Evelyn Shaw. That’s me.“

She touched her artificial cheek.

“But eventually the face in the mirror stopped feeling like the woman in that photograph.”

Daniel looked at the picture again.

“Maybe because you’re not.”

She turned sharply toward him.

He realized too late how cruel it sounded.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Then what did you mean?”

Daniel searched for words.

He was good with machines because machines rewarded precision.

People rarely did.

“I mean you’re not only her.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“You remember being her. You loved the people she loved. You’re carrying everything she was. But you’ve also spent twelve years becoming someone she never had the chance to become.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

Daniel continued.

“The woman in that photograph never met Orpheus.”

A tiny smile appeared.

“She never spent twelve years arguing with a building’s climate-control system.”

“It deserved it.”

“And she never met me.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No,” she whispered.

“She didn’t.”

Something changed between them then.

Neither mentioned it.

A week later, Daniel brought her outside.

Evelyn stopped at the laboratory entrance.

She hadn’t crossed it since the night she died.

Daniel was already halfway onto the sidewalk when he realized she wasn’t following.

“You okay?”

“I can’t.”

He returned.

“Why?”

“What if something happens?”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know.”

Cars passed.

People talked.

A bicycle bell rang somewhere down the street.

Ordinary life.

Evelyn stared at it as though Daniel had opened an airlock onto another planet.

“I died out there.”

“No. You died in there.”

She looked back toward the laboratory.

Daniel immediately regretted correcting her.

He held out his hand.

“We don’t have to go.”

Evelyn looked at his hand.

“You spent two hours modifying my power system.”

“Three.”

“And rented a van.”

“The van is refundable.”

“It absolutely isn’t.”

“No.”

That finally made her laugh.

She took his hand.

Her fingers tightened around his.

“Don’t let go.”

“I won’t.”

They walked seventeen meters.

Daniel knew because Evelyn measured it.

They reached the corner.

Then she stopped.

A breeze moved through her hair.

She closed her eyes.

“I’d forgotten wind.”

Daniel watched her.

Something hurt unexpectedly inside his chest.

Evelyn opened her eyes.

“Can we go farther?”

Daniel squeezed her hand.

“Anywhere you want.”

Their first argument happened two months later.

Daniel discovered Evelyn had been hiding diagnostic reports.

Her neural architecture was destabilizing.

“You’ve known for three weeks.”

“Twenty-four days.”

“That’s worse.”

“I didn’t want you trying to fix me.”

“That’s what I do.”

“I’m not one of your machines.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I know that.”

“Do you?”

The question stopped him.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Sometimes I don’t know whether you come here because you care about me or because I’m the most interesting engineering problem you’ve ever encountered.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Isn’t it?”

“No.”

“Then tell me why you’re here.”

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came.

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.”

She walked away.

Daniel left soon afterward.

He didn’t return the next evening.

Or the evening after that.

On the third night, someone knocked on Daniel’s apartment door.

He opened it.

Evelyn stood there.

Orpheus sat beside her.

Daniel stared.

“You came here?”

“I walked.”

“You’re six miles from the laboratory.”

“6.3.”

“In the rain?”

“It started halfway.”

Daniel looked at Orpheus.

“You let her do this?”

The hellhound sneezed.

Evelyn’s expression remained serious.

“I thought you weren’t coming back.”

Daniel stepped aside.

She entered.

It was the first time she’d seen his home.

She looked around.

Bare walls.

Engineering manuals.

A half-dead plant.

One chair at the kitchen table.

One coffee mug drying beside the sink.

“You live like this?”

Daniel frowned.

“Like what?”

“Like you’re expecting to leave.”

“I’m not.”

“Then why is there nothing here?”

Daniel had no answer.

Evelyn finally understood something about him.

“You were lonely.”

“I’m fine.”

“Daniel.”

“I said I’m fine.”

“You found a dead woman trapped inside a robot beneath an abandoned building, and somehow you’re still the loneliest person I’ve met.”

Despite himself, Daniel laughed.

Evelyn did too.

Then neither was laughing.

Daniel looked at her.

“I didn’t come back because you were right.”

Her expression changed.

“I don’t know where the engineer ends anymore.”

“And where what begins?”

He struggled with the word.

Evelyn waited.

Finally:

“Me.”

She stepped closer.

Daniel continued.

“I think about you at work. I see something stupid and wonder whether you’d find it funny. I buy two coffees without thinking. When something happens, you’re the person I want to tell.”

Evelyn’s eyes glistened.

“And that scares you?”

“Terrifies me.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re dying again.”

Silence.

That was the truth he hadn’t been able to say.

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I found you, Evelyn. And now I’m going to lose you.”

She touched his face.

“I’m scared too.”

Daniel leaned into her hand.

For several seconds neither moved.

Then Evelyn kissed him.

It was tentative.

Almost questioning.

Daniel answered.

And for the first time since her death, Evelyn felt someone’s arms around her who wasn’t holding her because she was frightened, damaged, or something that needed saving.

He simply wanted her there.

Across the room, Orpheus sighed dramatically and put his head beneath his paws.

Afterward, Daniel stopped treating the integration problem as something he alone had to solve.

They solved it together.

They filled whiteboards with equations.

Argued over neural mapping.

Stayed awake until sunrise.

Evelyn caught mistakes Daniel missed.

Daniel discovered structures inside ARI’s architecture Evelyn had never understood.

Their relationship became embedded in the work itself.

Engineer and engineer.

Human and machine.

Living man and dead woman.

Partners.

Eventually they found the answer.

And Daniel hated it.

Integration.

Not preservation.

Not transfer.

Evelyn’s human consciousness and ARI’s artificial intelligence would have to merge completely.

There would no longer be a ghost inside a machine.

There would be one consciousness.

Daniel stared at their equations.

“No.”

Evelyn stood beside him.

“We’ve checked it fourteen times.”

“Then we’ll check it fifteen.”

“Daniel.”

“We’ll find another solution.”

“What if there isn’t one?”

“There is.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I’ll find it.”

“Because you’re an engineer?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“No. Because you’re afraid.”

Daniel turned away.

She touched his shoulder.

“What if the person who wakes up doesn’t love me?” he asked.

Evelyn froze.

Daniel finally looked at her.

“Nobody knows what this will do to you. Your personality could change. Your emotions could change. Everything we’ve built could disappear.”

Evelyn took his hands.

“When I was human, I thought love meant finding someone and somehow remaining exactly who you were while being together.”

She shook her head.

“I was wrong.”

Daniel listened.

“People change each other. Every conversation rewrites something. Every loss does. Every person we love becomes part of whatever we become next.”

She placed his hand against her chest.

There was no heartbeat.

Only the faint vibration of machinery.

“You already changed me.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“And I changed you.”

He nodded.

“So perhaps integration isn’t the end of Evelyn.”

“What is it?”

“The next thing that happens to her.”

The night of the integration, the storm returned.

Orpheus came to say goodbye.

Evelyn embraced the black dog.

“Thank you for finding him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Wait.”

She smiled.

“You thought he found you accidentally?”

Daniel looked at Orpheus.

The hellhound’s tail moved once.

“You manipulative bastard.”

Orpheus licked his face.

Then darkness opened behind him.

He disappeared into whatever country waited beneath the world.

Daniel turned toward Evelyn.

She was afraid.

Not mechanically simulating fear.

Afraid.

“If I wake up different—”

Daniel interrupted her.

“I’ll meet you again.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“What?”

“If you remember everything, I’ll love you.”

He touched her cheek.

“If you remember nothing, I’ll introduce myself.”

A tear moved down her face.

“And if you’re someone in between…”

Daniel smiled.

“I’ll get to know her.”

Evelyn pressed her forehead against his.

“Daniel Mercer.”

“What?”

“I love you.”

He closed his eyes.

“I love you too.”

Then he activated the integration.

When ARI-7 awakened, Daniel was holding her hand.

Her eyes opened.

She stared at the ceiling.

Then at him.

Daniel couldn’t breathe.

She studied his face with an expression he couldn’t read.

“Hello,” Daniel whispered.

The woman tilted her head.

“Hello.”

His heart sank.

She touched his face.

“I know this face.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I have 4.7 million facial-recognition parameters describing it.”

She traced his cheek.

“I also remember seeing it the first time you realized I was crying.”

Her voice trembled.

“I remember kissing it.”

Daniel laughed through tears.

She smiled.

“I remember loving it.”

He pulled her into his arms.

Her arms wrapped around him.

Then Daniel felt something against his back.

Pat.

He froze.

Pat.

Evelyn gently rubbed his back.

Daniel began laughing.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

He held her tighter.

“Someone taught me that once.”

Months later, they returned to the café.

Two cups sat on the table.

This time Evelyn lifted hers and drank.

Daniel watched.

“Well?”

She considered it.

“This is terrible.”

“You’ve been demanding coffee for months.”

“I wanted good coffee.”

Daniel laughed.

Evelyn reached across the table and took his hand.

Outside, rain began falling.

Across the street stood a black dog.

Daniel noticed first.

Evelyn followed his gaze.

Orpheus watched them through the rain.

Evelyn smiled.

She didn’t look like a ghost anymore.

She didn’t look like a machine pretending to be human.

She simply looked like Evelyn.

She raised her hand.

Orpheus lowered his head.

Then the hellhound turned away.

“Do you think he’ll come back?” Daniel asked.

Evelyn watched him disappear among the pedestrians.

“No.”

“Why?”

She looked at Daniel.

For twelve years she had existed between two worlds, belonging completely to neither.

Then a black dog had walked through a storm and brought an ordinary engineer to her door.

Evelyn squeezed Daniel’s hand.

“He only comes for the lonely.”

Daniel looked toward the street.

Orpheus was gone.

Thunder murmured somewhere beyond the city.

Daniel turned back to Evelyn.

“Ready to go home?”

For just an instant, the word seemed to surprise her.

Then she smiled.

“Yes.”

They walked into the rain together.

THE END.
